If you're familiar with William Morris and like him, then, forge on, it's great, you'll love it. If this is your first time, then a word of caution. It's hard going, it's half poetry, half prose, mildly antiquated and better read in small installments. Reading from cover to cover in one sitting, would probably result in brain freeze or at the very least an unfortunate propensity to rhyme.It is a beautiful, gripping book, the fight scenes are not very violent, the love scenes not very sexy, the drama is softly touching and the overall effect like reading a painting. The characters stand out intensely and the colors are vivid. It even has a satisfactorily semi-tragic happy ending. I don't know of another author with this particular flavor, except perhaps Lord Dunsany. Highly recommended read.

Written in olde English script was hard enough, let alone the long-winded explanations of what the author was talking about - describing the scenery, the history, and the traditions of the folk in the book. Didnt even get to half way through the book. Just too much hard work.
If you love to reed, this is the book for you. It is easy to down load, with a great price.
This book is written in a very interesting style that is well-worth breaking into to experience some of the poetry as well as heroic tales within. I was greatly surprised and impressed.
The reader will clearly see the influence that these book had on J.R.R. Tolkien, especially in the setting, the names, the use of archaic english and the anglosaxon-germanic story frame. It will be interesting for Tolkien fans because of this. Otherwise it may result a little dull and maybe a bit to long. The book evolves around three battles between germanic tribes and invading roman legions.
Wish the author or editor would have added translations to the french and other foreign laguage phrases in this book like Sabatini's work. Formatting also was a big issue that made this book slow to read. The children's names were a bit absurd and made you wonder why the author was giving little boys, girl names??? Overall, the ending was both engaging and frightening as the author made you feel what is must have been like at that time and period in France. Ending was worth the read.
I heartily recommend this work to all who love sagas and the Viking age. Few writers convey the feel of a saga to the extent as William Morris does here. At points the story is slow, but the book has some wonderful poetry and thrilling battles. Be sure to have a dictionary by your side to decipher some of the more poetic words.
